Des Kiosques à musique - Bandstands
Welcome to this website,
whose purpose is to create and present a photographic database of bandstands from around the world. All of the photographs in this database have been contributed to this cause by viewers such as yourself who share an appreciation of them as a special artform. If you too have my passion for bandstands, the images you see here are sure to be a source of delight.

What is it about these structures
that appeal in such a strong way? Reflecting the imagination of their designers, they share in common an elevated platform, and columns of some sort supporting a protective roof.

They vary from the simple to the elaborate, from the purely functional to works of elegeance. Whether in small village parks or large city plazas, they serve many purposes, all of them directed at the public enjoyment. They are place where visitors might stop to survey and contemplate the surroundings, perhaps taking a few photographs. A place where parents might rest a few moments while children play nearby. A place to escape the heat of the sun or a sudden rain shower. A place where young lovers croon, and sometimes a place where they marry.  A focal point around which beautiful garden displays are often presented.
But all these are secondary uses to the primary intent....an alfresco stage of architectural beauty to complement the auditory beauty of public musical performances. These endless variations on a  simple design stir our imagination as much as the musical presentations stir our spirits.

Oh the many stories these places could tell if only they could speak! Each one is a living history, speaking to us now through these photographs.

If these inspire you to want to include bandstands in your area, you are welcome to contribute. Here is how it works. You will need a digital camera or a means to scan film prints/slides into digital files. (About 800x600 pixels is fine, or larger if you wish. I will final-edit the size). At least three or four photos are needed showing different
views and/or seasons.(The more the better to assist selection).
It is not essential, but if possible provide in your own words some information about the place. If you know of other websites with information about your bandstand, tell me so I can include them as a reference link. Also provide an address link to to your own webpage or photo album collection so I can properly credit you and direct visitors to your pages.

Send this information to me (address here) and I will take it from there in preparing a page featuring your bandstand.

Together we can enrich the database and let others share in enjoying the beauty of a place special to you. I hope you will see this as an opportunity to make a valuable contribution, and I thank you in advance.
