Country : United States of America
State : Ohio
County : Lake County
Population:20.255 (census 2000
The neighboring cities of Eastlake and Willoughby, Ohio share a common border along the Chagrin River, so the early history of the two are interwoven. Before the area was settled, there was a village of Erie Indians along the Eastlake side of the Chagrin River. This Erie Tribe was part of an Indian alliance known as the “Iroquois Confederation” who ceded their "Beaver Country" (the land east of the Cuyahoga River) to the British in 1701 in exchange for military protection. However, the Indians continued to live there.
French trading post, "Charlton", was established at the mouth of the Chagrin River around 1750.
In 1798 Charles Parker built a cabin and huts for the Connecticut Land Co. and David Abbott built the first mill (Chagrin Mill). It was not until the early 1800's that settlers began arriving in significant numbers from the east. They purchased land from the Connecticut Land Co. for $7 to $10 per acre.
Eventually, the Indians migrated west, as the arrival of more and more settlers threatened their culture and means of survival.
In 1849 the Eastlake area became known as the "Village of St. John." Neighboring Willoughby saw more rapid early development until 1897, when the C.P.& E. Shoreline Interurban Street Car Line was completed, bringing speculative land buyers into the Eastlake area. Soon the Eastlake area began to grow and prosper. Agriculture was the main source of income but retail and industrial development soon followed.
As with much of the nearby area, the village really began to boom after World War II as suburban expansion eastward from Cleveland overswept it. A major electrical generating utility serving NE Ohio was built here. A new City Hall and other city structures were constructed in the 1980's, and it is next to City Hall that the present Eastlake bandstand is situated.
The photographs show a large number of American flags around the site. This the “Boulevard of 500 Flags,” the entryway to the Civic complex. It is the largest permanent display of flags in the United States. Each flag is dedicated to one or more deceased military combat veterans from Lake County.
Musical performances at the bandstand are irregular. In recent years, the site became an attraction as a display area for vintage and customized “street rod” type automobiles making regular weekend appearances. Recorded music is presented from the bandstand throughout these popular sessions.
