States of America

County : Geauga
Township : Chester

The town
of Chesterland is located in the western portion of Geauga County approximately
18 miles from the city-center of Cleveland.

The entire
northeastern section of Ohio is sometimes referred to as “The Western Reserve.”
In colonial times, it was unsettled territory belonging to the State of
Connecticut. In 1786, Connecticut turned over its western property holdings
to the United States government, with the exception of this portion kept
as a “reserve.” The property was later surveyed and divided into “townships”
each five miles square. One of these was named Chester Township, and it
is here that present day Chesterland is situated.
|
Settlers
first started arriving around 1801. Initially they called this place Wooster,
but in 1816 the name was changed to Chester to reflect that of the township
itself. In 1899 the name was changed again to Chesterland to avoid confusion
with another Ohio town also called Chester.
|
Chesterland retains a
sprawling, rural character despite the more densely populated areas that
encroach its borders. This is partly due to zoning restrictions that require
homes be situated on multi-acre lots and that each property be self-sufficient
in water supply and disposal.
|
|
Nonetheless, Chester Township
has the largest population in Geauga County with approximately 11,000 people
and 4200 homes. By virtue of its proximity to Lake Erie but 500' altitude
above it, Chesterland is in the heart of Ohio’s “snow belt” during the
winter months.
The
land where Chesterland’s bandstand is situated is at the main crossroads
of the town and is known as Chester Township Park. This six and one-half
acre property was donated to the Township in February, 1811 by David Hudson,
with the stipulation that it be used solely as a Public Square, parade
ground and for public buildings as necessary.

Accordingly,
Chesterland’s City Hall and Township Maintenance facility occupy part of
this parcel, and the rest is devoted to recreational use. The bandstand
is a comparatively recent addition, having been added in 1984.
