Located
18 miles east of Cleveland, Chagrin Falls is another town dating to the
pioneer days of Ohio's early settlement.
The waterfalls
on the Chagrin River, from which the town took it's name, provided a power
source for the type of primitive manufacturing vital to develop and sustain
the surrounding area. |

The town
was established in 1823 and incorporated as an Ohio city in 1844. In later
years, the town would evolve from a manufacturing center to a commercial
center, then during the 20th century to a primarily residential community.
|
Today, Chagrin
Falls takes pride in maintaining a "quaint"
atmosphere reminiscent
of bygone times. The older shopping
district has
been well maintained and enjoys a steady
stream of visitors
attracted by it's eclectic collection of
small stores,
restaurants and boutiques, and of course
sightseeing
excursions to visit the older homes and the
splendid falls
themselves. Weekends are particularly
crowded with
visitors all year long!

|
A small triangular
park divides the main street of the town near the falls, and here a most
unusual "Appalachian" style bandstand was erected in 1877.
|
|
The construction
consists
entirely of
unfinished logs and limbs from cedar trees, and reflects the rugged pioneer
history of the city. The bandstand was restored in 1951, and a second restoration
is presently being considered, but it is otherwise just as originally built.
Throughout the summer, weekend concerts
are held at
the site. It is also the gathering and departure point for horse-drawn
carriage tours of the town during special events. At Christmastime, carolers
gather here for singing of Christmas songs.
