 City of Lincoln Guide
Steeped in History, Brimming with Life
As you approach the City of Lincoln, from any direction, you are drawn to the magnificent silhouette of the Cathedral stretching to the skies, brooding over 2000 years of history.  From the cobbled streets and antiques to the modern art scattered throughout the city, the past and present is all around.  There’s vibrancy, there's interest, there’s fun.

...In times past it was a prehistoric fort, a Roman settlement, captured by the Angles, then the Danes, and was one of the largest cities in the country. William the Conqueror commissioned the magnificent Castle in 1068, the Cathedral in 1072 - today the country’s third largest after St Paul’s and York Minster...

Don’t just see the City…
…Experience it!
The Victorian Arboretum is a newly restored magnificent park.
It offers relaxing walks through the rose gardens, past the lake and bandstand. The Arboretum is home to a wonderful Lion statue, a cast iron folly, expansive terraces and spectacular fountains.

Designed by Edward Milner and opened in 1872, the Arboretum was Lincoln’s first truly public park. Originally covering around eight hectares, the park expanded when the designer’s son, Henry Ernest Milner, was commissioned to add a north-west extension.
In 1953 a further small area of garden was also added to commemorate the Queen’s coronation. Since 1953 the park has remained largely unaltered. A successful bid to the Urban Parks Programme eventually allowed the council to undertake extensive refurbishment works, which have recently been completed. Today the Arboretum is Lincoln’s flagship park, setting the benchmark for the county.

The bandstand before conservation. The paint had chipped, ornamental sections had broken off and the zinc roof was coming loose. (EURA)
As part of the extensive redevelopment of the arboretum, we surveyed, dismantled, conserved and restored a wrought iron bandstand, a shelter and various urns, gates and railings. The result is authentically painted and resistant enough to last for years to come.

Twenty Good Reasons ... To Live In Lincoln
...The recently restored Lincoln Arboretum is another addition to the city's list of attractions. After a 3 million pound revamp, the park has been restored to its former glory. Once a space where concerts and parades would be held, the fine bandstand has been restored and there are new gardens and footpaths. Just the spot for a Sunday afternoon stroll...
