About Greeley
Country : United States of America
State : Colorado
County : Weld County
Estimated population in July 2005: 87,596
Greeley is located in Weld County, which is located in northeastern Colorado. Greeley and Weld County are mainly flat, with low rolling hills in the west. The foothills of the Rocky Mountains are only around 30–40 miles to the west, with the mountains clearly visible from Greeley. To the east lie sprawling farms and national grassland.
Greeley enjoys a semi-arid, steppe climate with hot summers and cold winters. Relative humidity is low year-round, with dewpoints rarely exceeding 60°F, even at the height of summer. Lots of sunshine and fairly little precipitation make for a pleasant climate year-round.
Precipitation is usually in the form of snow from October to April, but snowfalls are often light and often melt within a few days.

The agricultural editor for the New York Tribune, Nathan C. Meeker, dreamed of a Utopian community on the plains northeast of Denver. He spearheaded a drive to form a colony based on cooperation, irrigation, temperance, religion, and education. His efforts were supported by his editor, Horace Greeley, who wrote the famous phrase, "Go West, young man, go West." In 1868, Meeker founded this town and named it Greeley. It was located where the rail line from Denver to Cheyenne crossed the Platte and the Poudre Rivers.
